Wearing the Toga in ancient Greece must have been a very comfortable dress to wear. It was rectangular and fastened with a clasp at the shoulder, a sash was sometimes worn too. Ladies garments were worn to the ankle, while men’s were worn to the knee.
The tunics you sometimes see in pictures are actually called chi-tons, they were usually worn to the ankles by the woman, and down to thee knees by the men.
We can tell from the surviving Greek vases with pictures painted upon them that the garments the Greeks wore were often very colorful and quite intricate in their design. At home it is believed that they went barefoot, while wearing soft slippers or boots when outside. If the ladies wore bracelets they were often worn in pairs.

Ordinary Greeks lived in small mud huts with maybe a yard or small walled garden. They used sun dried mud to build with which sadly crumbled away and we have only paintings to show us what they looked like. They probably had wooden shutters to close against the hot sun.

It is widely believed that one reason why the Ancient Olympic Games are often depicted with men competing without their toga’s, is because women were exclude from participating. Seemingly one enterprising female had won a footrace whilst dressed as a man. So to avoid such an embarrassing state of affairs happening again, clothing was forbidden!
There have been a number of movies over the past few years covering ancient Greece. Clash of the Titans, Troy and 300 to name only a few of the most popular. But we have always loved to dress ourselves up in Greek dress, after all for any of us carrying a few extra pounds, the toga is a brilliant way to hide it all.
Life was very different for men and women in Ancient Greece. Men were expected to become involved with the public life of their own city, while women had no status other than that of their husband or father. Their position was one within the home as a wife or mother.
In Greek mythology it is widely believed that there were twelve Gods. They met on Mount Olympus, all except for Hades who lived in the under world. The Greeks named their highest mountain peak Mount Olympus in their honour.
